A Beginner's Guide to Quilt Dimensions and Block Size

A Beginner's Guide to Quilt Dimensions and Block Size

Quilt Blocks Reference Chart

"This chart is a helpful guide to reference when planning a quilt and you will be using your own design and blocks. The numbers in the chart represent listed averages and include a pillow tuck and long drop on the sides and bottom. If you do not want a pillow tuck on your quilt, subtract ten to twelve inches from the length." - Superior Threads

Twin Size Quilt (Mattress size 39" x 75")
Block Size Block Across & Down Total Size No Border
12" 63 (7x9) 84" x 108"
15" 42 (6x7) 90" x 105"

The goal is to be as close to 81" x 106", which is the commercial size for a Twin Size bedspread.

Full Size Quilt (Mattress size 54" x 75")
Block Size Block Across & Down Total Size No Border
12" 72 (8x9) 96" x 108"
15" 42 (6x7) 90" x 105"

The goal is to be as close to 96" x 106", which is the commercial size for a Full Size bedspread.

Queen Size Quilt (Mattress size 60" x 80")
Block Size Block Across & Down Total Size No Border
12" 72 (8x9) 96" x 108"
15" 56 (7x8) 105" x 120"

The goal is to be as close to 102" x 112", which is the commercial size for a Queen Size bedspread.

King Size Quilt (Mattress size 78" x 80")
Block Size Block Across & Down Total Size No Border
12" 100 (10x10) 120" x 120"
15" 64 (8x8) 120" x 120"

The goal is to be as close to 120" x 112", which is the commercial size for a King Size bedspread.

A note about the similarities between a full and queen mattress:

"The dimensions listed for the full size and queen size quilts are identical. Because the mattress sizes are so similar (full is 54" x 75" and queen is 60" x 80"), the recommended block sizes are the same. If a border is added onto a smaller-sized quilt configuration, the necessary length and width will be achieved.

There is roughly a six inch difference between a full and queen mattress. If a block is twelve inches, we can't cut the block in half to accommodate this difference. We can however, add a border around the quilt for extra width or length." - Superior Threads
